Learn how to make the ultimate light, airy, and perfectly sweet homemade whipped cream in minutes with just three simple ingredients. This foolproof whipped cream recipe is perfect for topping desserts, fruits, and hot beverages.

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 2 cups 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup (240ml) heavy cream (or heavy whipping cream), very cold
1-2 tablespoons granulated sugar or powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Chill your equipment. Place a large mixing bowl (preferably metal) and your whisk attachment (or beaters) in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. This ensures the cream stays as cold as possible during whipping.
Step 2: Combine ingredients. Pour the very cold heavy cream into the chilled mixing bowl. Add the granulated sugar (or powdered sugar) and vanilla extract.
Step 3: Start whipping. Using an electric mixer (stand mixer or hand mixer), start on low speed to gently incorporate the sugar and vanilla without splattering. Once combined, increase the speed to medium-high.
Step 4: Whip to desired consistency. Continue whipping, moving the mixer around the bowl to ensure even whipping. Watch closely: for soft peaks (cream gently slumps), stop whipping. For medium peaks (holds shape with a slight curl), stop whipping. For stiff peaks (stands straight up), stop whipping immediately.
Step 5: Serve immediately or store. Use your freshly made whipped cream right away for best results. If storing, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2-3 days.

Notes

Always use very cold heavy cream and chill your bowl and whisk for the best results. For a more stable whipped cream, especially for piping, use powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar, as the cornstarch acts as a natural stabilizer. Avoid over-whipping, as it will turn the cream into butter. If you prefer a richer flavor, you can scrape in seeds from half a vanilla bean instead of extract.
