Transform leftover cooked rice into irresistibly crunchy, golden-brown toppers using just a waffle maker. Perfect as a base for appetizers, a topping for bowls, or a satisfying snack!

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 8-10 toppers 1x

Ingredients

Scale

3 cups cooked sushi rice (or short-grain white rice), slightly warm or room temperature
2 tablespoons sesame oil, plus extra for greasing
1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari/coconut aminos)
1 teaspoon rice vinegar (optional)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
Pinch of white pepper (optional)
Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
Nori strips, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your waffle maker to medium-high heat. Lightly brush the waffle plates with a thin layer of sesame oil.
Step 2: In a medium bowl, combine the cooked rice, 2 tablespoons of sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar (if using), garlic powder (if using), and white pepper (if using). Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated and the rice is evenly coated.
Step 3: Take about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of the seasoned rice mixture and gently press it into a compact ball or patty. The exact amount will depend on the size of your waffle maker compartments.
Step 4: Carefully place the rice patty into the center of each waffle maker section. Close the lid and cook for 4-7 minutes, or until the rice is deeply golden brown and very crispy. Cooking time will vary based on your waffle maker and desired crispiness. Do not open too early, or the rice may stick.
Step 5: Once cooked, carefully remove the Waffle Maker Crispy Rice Toppers using tongs or a non-scratch utensil. Place them on a wire rack to prevent them from getting soggy.
Step 6: Repeat with the remaining rice mixture. If desired, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds or crumbled nori strips immediately after removing from the waffle maker.
Step 7: Serve the Waffle Maker Crispy Rice Toppers warm as a snack, side dish, or as a base for your favorite toppings. Enjoy!

Notes

For best results, use day-old cooked rice as it tends to be drier and crisps up more effectively. If your waffle maker doesn't have a non-stick coating, brush generously with oil to prevent sticking. These toppers are best enjoyed fresh, but can be reheated in a toaster oven or air fryer to regain crispiness.
