Ingredients
14 oz extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed
3 tbsp cornstarch
2 tbsp neutral cooking oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
3 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp maple syrup or honey
1 tsp rice vinegar
1 tsp toasted sesame oil
Optional: sesame seeds and green onions for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Drain the tofu and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel. Place a heavy object on top and let it press for 20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
Step 2: Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. In a medium bowl, toss the cubes with cornstarch until evenly coated.
Step 3: Heat neutral oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu in a single layer.
Step 4: Fry the tofu for 3-4 minutes per side until all sides are golden brown and crispy. Remove tofu from the pan and set aside.
Step 5: In the same pan, add sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Step 6: Stir in soy sauce, maple syrup, and rice vinegar. Let the sauce simmer for 1 minute until it slightly thickens.
Step 7: Add the crispy tofu back into the pan and toss quickly to coat each piece in the glaze. Serve immediately.
Notes
Always use extra-firm tofu for pan-frying. If you are short on time, use a dedicated tofu press to speed up the moisture removal process.
