The quintessential Southern cocktail, a refreshing blend of fresh mint, quality bourbon, simple syrup, and crushed ice, perfect for the Kentucky Derby or any warm day.

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Ingredients

Scale

8-10 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
0.5 oz (15ml) simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water)
2 oz (60ml) good quality Kentucky bourbon
Plenty of crushed ice

Instructions

Step 1: Gather your chilled julep cup, fresh mint leaves, simple syrup, bourbon, and crushed ice.
Step 2: Place the fresh mint leaves and simple syrup into the bottom of your chilled julep cup.
Step 3: Gently muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup. Press down and twist 3-4 times. The goal is to release the aromatic oils, not to tear the leaves, which can lead to bitterness. You should smell a fresh mint aroma.
Step 4: Add the bourbon to the cup.
Step 5: Fill the cup generously with crushed ice, packing it tightly to form a dome above the rim. This is essential for the characteristic frost and chill of a classic mint julep recipe.
Step 6: Stir the mixture gently with a bar spoon for 15-20 seconds. This action chills and slightly dilutes the drink, and helps to frost the outside of the cup beautifully.
Step 7: Garnish your mint julep with a generous sprig of fresh mint, tucking it into the ice near the straw so its aroma enhances each sip. Serve immediately and enjoy this classic mint julep recipe.

Notes

For best results, use fresh, vibrant spearmint and a good quality Kentucky straight bourbon. The key is to bruise the mint leaves just enough to release their oils, but not to shred them, which can impart a bitter flavor. Always serve immediately after preparation with plenty of crushed ice to maintain the frosty cup and optimal dilution.
