This simple and safe homemade hummingbird nectar recipe provides the perfect sustenance for attracting hummingbirds to your garden. Made with just two ingredients – sugar and water – it mimics natural flower nectar, ensuring a healthy and irresistible treat for your tiny feathered visitors. Easy to prepare and vital for supporting local ecosystems, especially during migration.

  • Total Time: 7 minutes
  • Yield: 4 cups 1x

Ingredients

Scale

4 cups water (filtered or tap)
1 cup granulated white sugar

Instructions

Step 1: Combine 4 cups of water and 1 cup of granulated white sugar in a clean saucepan.
Step 2: Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Continue boiling for 1-2 minutes, or until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Step 3: Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the nectar to cool completely to room temperature. This is crucial before transferring to feeders.
Step 4: Once cooled, fill your clean hummingbird feeders. Store any unused nectar in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Step 5: Replace the nectar in your feeders every 2-3 days in warm weather (above 80°F/27°C) or once a week in cooler weather. Clean feeders thoroughly with hot water and a bottle brush each time you refill.

Notes

Always use plain white granulated sugar and avoid artificial sweeteners, honey, or food dyes, as these can be harmful to hummingbirds. Keep feeders impeccably clean to prevent mold and bacteria.
