This easy Funfetti Dip recipe is a creamy, sweet, and colorful dessert dip that tastes just like birthday cake! Made with cream cheese, cake mix, and whipped topping, it's perfect for parties and gatherings.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes (plus chilling time)
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (15.25 oz) box white or yellow cake mix (funfetti preferred), heat treated
1 (8 oz) container frozen whipped topping (Cool Whip), thawed and chilled
1/2 cup rainbow sprinkles, plus more for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Begin by heat treating your dry cake mix. Spread the cake mix evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 5 minutes. Alternatively, you can microwave it in a microwave-safe bowl on high for 60-90 seconds, stirring after 30 seconds. This step is crucial to kill any potential bacteria in the raw flour. Once heat-treated, let the cake mix cool completely to room temperature.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the softened cream cheese on medium speed until it is smooth and creamy, with no lumps (1-2 minutes).
Step 3: Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract to the cream cheese. Beat again on low speed until just combined, then increase to medium-high and beat until the mixture is light and fluffy (2-3 minutes). Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Step 4: Gradually add the cooled, heat-treated cake mix to the cream cheese mixture, beating on low speed until fully incorporated and no dry pockets remain.
Step 5: Gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip using a rubber spatula. Use a light hand to maintain the airy texture of the Cool Whip, folding until no white streaks remain and the mixture is uniformly combined.
Step 6: Finally, gently fold in the rainbow sprinkles. Mix just enough to distribute them evenly without overmixing to prevent color bleeding.
Step 7: Transfer the funfetti dip to a serving bowl. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to firm up.
Step 8: Just before serving, garnish with a few extra sprinkles if desired. Serve with graham crackers, vanilla wafers, fresh fruit, or pretzels.

Notes

Ensure cream cheese is softened and Cool Whip is thawed for the best creamy texture. Always heat-treat your dry cake mix to ensure food safety before adding it to any no-bake recipe. For vibrant sprinkles, use jimmies (rod-shaped) instead of nonpareils (tiny balls) as nonpareils tend to bleed color more easily.
