Ingredients
1 lb Brioche or Challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
8 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
Powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving
Instructions
Step 1: Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray and place the bread cubes evenly inside.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until completely combined.
Step 3: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the prepared dish.
Step 4: Gently press the bread down to ensure it is well-coated in the custard. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 12 hours.
Step 5: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature while the oven warms.
Step 6: Bake uncovered for 40-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
Step 7: Let the french toast recipe casserole cool for 5 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar and serving with maple syrup.
Notes
For best results, use day-old bread. If your bread is fresh, toast the cubes in the oven at 300°F for 10 minutes to dry them out.
