Ingredients
6 oz (approx. 180ml) cold tonic water
1-2 shots (1-2 oz or 30-60ml) fresh espresso
Ice cubes
1 slice of orange, lemon, or grapefruit for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Ensure your tonic water is thoroughly chilled. Cold tonic water is key to a refreshing Espresso Tonic.
Step 2: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Use good quality ice that won't melt too quickly.
Step 3: Pour the 6 oz of cold tonic water over the ice in the glass.
Step 4: Brew 1 to 2 shots of fresh espresso. If you don't have an espresso machine, use a strong, concentrated coffee from an AeroPress or Moka Pot.
Step 5: Gently and slowly pour the freshly brewed espresso over the back of a spoon, holding the spoon just above the tonic water. This creates a beautiful layered effect.
Step 6: Garnish your Espresso Tonic with a slice of orange, lemon, or grapefruit. A gentle squeeze of the citrus peel over the drink will release aromatic oils, enhancing the flavor. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
For the best experience, use high-quality tonic water and freshly brewed espresso. Adjust the espresso-to-tonic ratio to your preference. Some prefer a sweeter drink; a dash of simple syrup can be added to the tonic before the espresso.
