Ingredients
2 (3 oz) packages blue-raspberry or berry blue gelatin mix
4 cups boiling water
4 cups cold water
1 cup graham cracker crumbs or crushed vanilla wafers
1-2 bags assorted gummy candies (fish, sharks, turtles, etc.)
Optional: Whipped cream for topping
Optional: Rock candy or sour gummy strips for coral/seaweed
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Jello Base. In a large, heat-safe bowl, combine 2 (3 oz) packages of blue-raspberry or berry blue gelatin with 2 cups of freshly boiled water. Whisk continuously and thoroughly until the gelatin powder is completely dissolved. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes. Ensure there are no granules remaining for a clear, pristine "ocean."
Step 2: Add Cold Water to Cool. Stir in 2 cups of cold water to the dissolved gelatin mixture. This helps cool down the mixture rapidly and brings it to the ideal temperature for the next steps.
Step 3: Chill the First Jello Layer. Pour about 1/3 to 1/2 inch of the blue jello mixture into the bottom of each clear plastic cup or glass jar. You'll want around 8-10 cups for this recipe. Place these cups carefully in the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes, or until the jello is partially set but still slightly sticky to the touch. This firm-but-soft base is absolutely crucial for our Edible Aquarium Jello Cups Recipe as it will hold our "sand" without it sinking completely to the bottom.
Step 4: Create the Sand Layer. Once the first jello layer is partially set, gently sprinkle a tablespoon or two of graham cracker crumbs (our delicious "sand") evenly over the top of the jello in each cup. For an even more realistic beach effect, you can press some crumbs lightly against the sides of the cup near the bottom. Return the cups to the refrigerator for another 10-15 minutes to help set the crumbs firmly in place.
Step 5: Place First Round of "Sea Creatures." Now for the really fun part! Once the "sand" layer is mostly set, carefully place some gummy fish, sharks, or other sea creature candies on top of the sand, pushing them gently into the partially set jello. Try to position them strategically so they'll be clearly visible through the clear cup, creating depth and visual interest in your Edible Aquarium Jello Cups Recipe.
Step 6: Pour the Second Jello Layer. Gently pour another 1/2 to 3/4 inch of the remaining blue jello mixture over the candies and sand. Be very gentle to avoid disturbing the creatures too much or washing away your sand. Return the cups to the refrigerator for another 30-45 minutes, or until this second layer is partially set. Patience is a virtue here!
Step 7: Add More Sea Creatures and "Plants." Once the second layer is partially set, it's time to add more gummy candies. This time, you might want to "float" some creatures higher up in the "water" or add edible seaweed and coral. Sour candy strips work wonderfully for seaweed, and small pieces of rock candy or even orange/red gummy worms can mimic coral formations. This layering technique is absolutely key to making your Edible Aquarium Jello Cups Recipe look dynamic and realistic, with creatures at different depths.
Step 8: Final Jello Pour and Complete Chill. Carefully pour the remaining blue jello mixture into the cups, filling them almost to the top. Make sure to leave a little room if you plan to add whipped cream or a final topping. Refrigerate the cups for at least 3-4 hours, or preferably overnight, until the jello is completely firm and set. This long chill ensures everything holds together beautifully.
Step 9: Final Touches (Optional but Recommended!). Once fully set, you can add a beautiful swirl of whipped cream on top for a "foamy wave" or cloud effect. You can also sprinkle a few more graham cracker crumbs along the rim or place a final, adorable gummy fish on the whipped cream. For convenient storage, especially if you're making a large batch for a party, I highly recommend using Basics Glass Food Storage containers to keep them fresh and stackable!
