A healthy and flavorful baked version of traditional Dahi Toast, featuring sturdy bread topped with a tangy, spiced yogurt and vegetable mixture, baked until golden and crispy.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings (8 slices) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup thick Greek yogurt (or hung curd)
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
1-2 green chilies, finely chopped (optional, adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (or cayenne, adjust to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
8 slices of sturdy bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or thick-cut white)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine the thick yogurt, finely chopped onion, bell pepper, and cilantro. Add the ginger-garlic paste, green chilies (if using), cumin powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
Step 3: Taste the yogurt mixture and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
Step 4: Lay your bread slices on the prepared baking sheet. Using a spoon or spatula, spread a generous and even layer of the yogurt mixture over each slice of bread, extending almost to the edges.
Step 5: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the topping is set, golden brown, and the edges of the bread are crispy.
Step 6: Once baked, carefully remove the Dahi Toast from the oven. Let it cool for a minute or two on the baking sheet.
Step 7: Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro and a pinch of chaat masala (optional). Serve immediately while warm and crispy.

Notes

For best results, ensure your yogurt is very thick. If using regular yogurt, hang it in a cheesecloth for a few hours to drain excess water. Adjust spice levels to your preference. Serve immediately for optimal crispiness.
