A stunning and easy-to-make layered trifle featuring fresh mixed berries, light lemon-infused cream, and fluffy angel food cake, perfect for any 4th of July celebration.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8-10 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 (10-12 ounce) angel food cake, pre-made or store-bought, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon lemon zest
2 cups heavy cream, chilled
1 lb fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 pint fresh blueberries
1 pint fresh raspberries
1/2 cup sparkling cider or lemon-lime soda (optional, for soaking cake)
Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with granulated sugar, vanilla extract, fresh lemon juice, and lemon zest until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
Step 2: In a separate, chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold half of the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until just combined. Reserve the other half of the whipped cream for layering.
Step 3: If using, lightly brush or drizzle the angel food cake cubes with sparkling cider or lemon-lime soda. This adds a nice touch of moisture and flavor, making it one of the best 4th of July recipes.
Step 4: Begin assembling the trifle in a large, clear glass trifle bowl (about 3-4 quart capacity). Place a layer of about one-third of the cake cubes at the bottom.
Step 5: Spread one-third of the lemon cream cheese mixture evenly over the cake cubes.
Step 6: Arrange a generous layer of mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) over the cream, using about one-third of the total berries. This vibrant layer makes these 4th of July recipes truly pop!
Step 7: Repeat the layers: cake cubes, lemon cream cheese mixture, and mixed berries, until all ingredients are used, ending with a beautiful top layer of berries. Make sure to save some of the prettiest berries for the very top.
Step 8: If desired, dollop or pipe the reserved plain whipped cream on top, or simply use it for an extra creamy finish. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs if you like.
Step 9: Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the cake to absorb the moisture. This chill time is crucial for many 4th of July recipes.
Step 10: Serve chilled and enjoy your spectacular Sparkling Berry Trifle, a fantastic addition to your collection of 4th of July recipes!

Notes

For best results, assemble the trifle the day before serving to allow flavors to fully develop and the cake to soften. You can substitute pound cake for angel food cake if preferred. For an adult twist, drizzle the cake with a little Grand Marnier or berry liqueur instead of sparkling cider.
