2 lbs ground beef (80/20 lean)
1 large yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (15 oz each) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes with green chiles
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup beef broth

Instructions

Step 1: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain the excess fat.
Step 2: Add the diced onions and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef and sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent.
Step 3: Transfer the beef mixture into the slow cooker insert.
Step 4: Add the kidney beans, black beans, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes with chiles, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cocoa powder, salt, pepper, and beef broth to the slow cooker.
Step 5: Stir all the ingredients until well combined, then cover with the lid.
Step 6: Cook on Low for 7-8 hours or on High for 3-4 hours.
Step 7: Taste and adjust seasonings before serving warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

For best results, always brown the meat before adding it to the slow cooker to lock in the flavor.
