A rich, velvety, and authentic alfredo sauce recipe made with real butter, heavy cream, and freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1/2 cup Unsalted Butter
2 cups Heavy Cream
2 cups Freshly Grated Parmigiano Reggiano
3 cloves Garlic, minced
1/4 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Black Pepper
1 pinch Nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium-low heat until it begins to bubble gently.
Step 2: Add the minced garlic to the melted butter and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, ensuring the garlic does not brown.
Step 3: Pour in the heavy cream and whisk constantly as you bring the mixture to a very gentle simmer.
Step 4: Reduce the heat to low and begin adding the grated Parmesan cheese one handful at a time, whisking continuously until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
Step 5: Season with salt, black pepper, and optional nutmeg. Remove from heat and let the sauce sit for 2 minutes to thicken before serving over your favorite pasta.

Notes

Always use freshly grated Parmesan cheese for this alfredo sauce recipe to ensure a smooth texture. Pre-shredded cheese contains anti-caking agents that will make the sauce grainy.
